Sports Nutrition
Everything athletes need
Sports nutrition includes a variety of nutrients and food supplements that are specially adapted to the needs of athletes. It serves to provide the body with the necessary nutrients that are consumed during intensive training. A balanced diet plays a central role in this, but sometimes supplements are useful to cover the increased requirements.
Why sports nutrition?
Athletes often have an increased need for certain nutrients. On the one hand due to muscle building, on the other hand due to losses through sweat and urine.
While a balanced, plant-based diet forms the basis for an optimal supply, supplements can facilitate the absorption of nutrients and compensate for deficiencies.
What does sports nutrition include?
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the most important source of energy for athletes, especially in endurance sports. They are quickly converted into glucose and provide the body with the energy it needs during training.
Proteins
Proteins are essential for building and maintaining muscle. Protein shakes and protein products are a practical way for strength athletes and bodybuilders in particular to cover their protein requirements.
Fats
Fats are also an important part of sports nutrition, especially for endurance athletes. They provide a long-lasting source of energy, which is particularly important during prolonged exercise.
Vitamins and minerals
An adequate intake of minerals and vitamins is essential for the health and performance of athletes. Depending on the length and frequency of training and the type of sport, the need for certain vitamins and minerals can increase significantly. This is because these micronutrients are excreted more via sweat and urine or are needed more due to the increased formation of free radicals.
Fluids
Sufficient fluid intake is the basis for every athlete to compensate for fluid loss through sweat.
Take individual needs into account
Every athlete has individual nutritional needs. These depend on various factors that influence their nutrient and energy requirements. These include the training goal (e.g. building muscle, improving performance), body weight and height, the type and intensity of training and the personal diet (e.g. vegan, omnivorous).
Example: Needs in endurance and strength sports
- Endurance athletes should pay special attention to their carbohydrate intake before, during and after longer periods of exercise in order to replenish glycogen stores and prevent fatigue.
- Strength athletes, on the other hand, benefit from a high-quality and high protein intake to optimally provide their muscles and support muscle building. It is not only the quantity of protein that is important, but also its quality - i.e. a high biological value.
Food supplements and supplements for athletes
In addition to a balanced diet, nutritional supplements can help to provide the body with nutrients that are needed more during training or are difficult to obtain from the diet.
It is important that each athlete decides individually which products he or she needs, as requirements vary depending on the type of sport, intensity of training and goals.
Important sports supplements:
Creatine
Creatine is one of the best-known nutritional supplements. It increases physical performance during high-speed strength training as part of short-term intensive physical activity.
Amino acids
Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, form the basis of our muscles. Adequate protein intake and a sufficient supply of amino acids are particularly important during intensive sporting activity.
Pre-, intra- and post-workout products
A targeted intake of nutritional supplements can be of particular importance in sport. The timing of the intake plays an important role here. There are special nutrient compositions that are specifically tailored to the needs before, during or after training.
Sport Essentials
Important micronutrients such as magnesium, zinc and B vitamins are essential for regular physical activity. With our nutri+ Sport Essentials, we have developed a product that is perfectly tailored to the needs of demanding training phases.
Please note: Food supplements are supplements and not a substitute for a balanced diet. They only develop their full effect in combination with a healthy lifestyle, needs-based training and sufficient Regeneration.
