What is beta-alanine?
Beta-alanine, also known as β-alanine, is an amino acid that your body can produce itself in the liver. It is therefore known as a non-essential amino acid. It is also found in animal foods such as meat and fish. Together with histidine, beta-alanine plays an important role in the formation of the dipeptide carnosine. Beta-alanine is the limiting factor, i.e. the amino acid that is present in the smaller quantity in this process.
Carnosine is mainly found in the fast-twitch type II muscle fibers, which are active during intensive exercise. The dipeptide acts as a buffer, which stabilizes the pH value in the muscles and thus counteracts acidosis.
How is beta-alanine taken?
The supplement is available in the form of powders, capsules or tablets. It is recommended to take a daily dose of 2.5 g of beta-alanine, with the best effects being achieved over several weeks. Many athletes also combine beta-alanine with other supplements or go straight for a pre-workout booster.
Note: You may experience a slight tingling sensation on the skin immediately after taking it, which is a harmless and normal reaction of the body.
