Taurine is an organic compound produced in the body by the breakdown of the amino acids cysteine and methionine and is often incorrectly labelled as an amino acid. It is found throughout the body, with particularly high concentrations found in muscles, leucocytes and the brain. Whilst taurine has long been considered non-essential as the body produces it itself, the amount produced is often only sufficient for basic organic functions. As taurine is mainly found in animal foods such as meat, fish, seafood, eggs and dairy products, supplementation is particularly recommended for vegans and vegetarians.
